Laboratory tests are important for many initial patient evaluations upon entry into care, and before or after initiation or modification of any treatment regime. Baseline lab test results are key in establishing a case management strategy and can be used to evaluate and monitor a patient's response to existing treatments. The ability to accurately interpret lab data plays an important role in evaluating the clinical course of a malady, in addition to a patient's symptoms, history, or physical exam findings, and is an essential skill in facilitating fully informed clinical decisions.
