Additional product info: The earliest recorded medicaluse of cod-liver oil dates to 1789, used it for treating rheumatism (1).Cod liver oil is an important source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Favourable changes of plasma and cellular lipids, blood platelet function and eicosanoid formation were noted in healthy adult male volunteers who consumed 10–40 ml of cod liver oil daily for five months (2). The n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from the cod liver oil supplement are rapidly and reversibly incorporated into plasma, platelet and red cell membrane phospholipids, largely at the expense of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (3). Oral supplements of 2.2 g a day of EPA and DHA from Cod liver oil reduced the daily intake of NSAIDs by more than a third in almost 40% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, without any worsening of their disease activity (4).
EPA and DHA are also crucial to brain development up to 12 years of age and normal brain functioning. DHA is particularly important to brain functioning due to its influence on neural membrane properties, which modulate cell signalling. DHA concentration in the brain decreases with age in humans and this has been postulated to be consequential to the age-related deterioration in central nervous system functions (5). Fish oil supplementation supports the development of the brain, eyes and nerves in children and adolescents and helps support cognitive health and brain function (6). A study suggests that maternal concentration of n-3 very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (10 ml Cod liver oil) during pregnancy might be of importance for later cognitive function of their child, such as sequential processing (7).
The health benefits of vitamin A include the maintenance of eyesight, bone and skin membranes, and to help maintain immune function. Vitamin A also aid in maintaining night vision and development and maintenance of teeth (8).
Vitamin D aid the maintenance of bone, tooth development and maintenance as well as the absorption of calcium and phosphorus (9).
